Learning to take in order to give back

By | Rebel Elements | No Comments

An article by our own Julie Kerwin for those of us who need to take more in order to give more

Right about now, you are probably thinking that I must be some sort of meek woman who doesn’t know how to use her voice. This could not be further from the truth. I have no problem using my voice. However, it is often said that people can be divided into two groups: givers and takers. I have always chosen the lane that says “givers”; and I do think it’s a choice. As a young adult, I chose to make a habit of giving early and often enough that it formed permanent neuro-pathways in my brain. As a result, I find it very hard to shift into “takers” mode.

Random Musings/The Power of Oblivion

By | Rebel Elements | No Comments
As I move through the city, I often grab lunch at a restaurant bar. I have discovered that restaurant bars at lunch time are a great place to sit by one’s self, open the lap top, fire up the WIFI hotspot, and get some work done.

Over the summer, I found myself in an area of the city that I rarely frequent. So, I went in search of a restaurant bar and found a modern Italian cafe. About twenty minutes into my meal, I called my husband to share the exciting news: the restaurant’s music was a playlist of my late teens and early twenties.

“Wow!” I said to him. “It’s like I’m reliving our courtship through music. I love it! I guess that I must be this restaurant’s perfect demographic, because this is the soundtrack of my life.”

Honoring Anna: Courage, Superpowers & Cancer

By | Rebel Elements | One Comment

Anna Bravery

Months ago, I received a message on my business phone. The woman on my voicemail asked me to call her, but she gave no hint of why she wanted to speak. Many of the messages that come through our system are wrong numbers. Apparently, a water company and IAmElemental share a similar business number. As a result, I assumed that, like many others, this woman wanted to cancel her water delivery for the month. Though it was the weekend, I was worried that I would forget to return the call. So, I walked to the outfield just before the start of my 10-year-old’s Little League play-off game and dialed her number. My husband found me crying in right field shortly afterward.

The caller, Louise, explained to me that her 14-year-old-granddaughter, Anna, had been fighting a rare adult form of cancer called epithlioid sarcoma for four years. Although she had been scheduled to arrive in New York to participate in a new protocol, her family had just learned from her Michigan doctors that the most recent round of tests showed that the cancer had progressed. Not only did Anna no longer qualify for the new protocol, she only had a few weeks left to live. Read More
